“Can we swap places?”

“Seriously?” Franky asks, not at all moving from her place curled around Erica.

“Yes, seriously.” Erica pulls away, twisting around to take in Franky’s sprawled form and quirked eyebrow. “Come on,” she says, gesturing for Franky to roll over. Franky does, and Erica shifts in closer, arm winding around Franky’s waist.

“Good night,” Franky says, and Erica ignores the smirk she can hear in her voice.

“Okay, fine,” Erica huffs, not five minutes later, and untangles them before shifting back into their original position. “Okay, I get it.”

“Some people are just born little spoons,” Franky says, and presses a kiss to the curve of Erica’s jaw.

“Shut up.”

“You’re wrong.”

“You’ve been a grad for five minutes,” Erica says, barely bothering to glance at where she knows Franky’s lounging in the doorway. “Are you sure about that?”

She knows that, if she does look, she’ll crack, because Franky in a suit is almost as good as Franky in nothing.

“Positive,” she says, coming in to stand in front of Erica. She towers over where Erica sits on the lounge, and when Erica doesn’t look up from the papers resting on her knee Franky nudges them out of the way, parts Erica’s legs with her own.

“Cite your authority,” Erica says, finally looking up. She’s fairly certain Franky only passed Contracts because of this game, and she tugs Franky by the beltloops of her pants until she’s straddling Erica’s lap. “And make it AGLC compliant.”

who uses all the hot water in the morning

Franky’s so quick in the shower Erica suspects she has some kind of water phobia until works out whyFranky doesn’t like spending too much time in there.

“Hi,” Erica says, letting the shower door swing shut behind her. “Mind if I join you?”

“Yeah, no probs, I’m done anyway.” She’s completely covered in soap, and yet she makes a move to get out, and Erica grasps her arm before she can make her escape.

“Stay for a second,” she says, trailing her fingers down to tangle between Franky’s. “I could use some help.”

The water takes forever to run cold, and when it does Franky scream is so girlie it sends Erica into a fit of laughter that ends with Franky holding her under the freezing spray until she apologises.

what they order from take out

They’re watching tv. It’s all Franky’s really wanted to do since she’s been there. Out. At Erica’s. Something about how without Foxtel or the internet, she hasn’t seen a single lesbian on tv in five years, and she just wants to remember they exist. Erica doesn’t point out that they could just go out and do that—Pinkalicious is on that weekend; she looked up things they could do, like she had to prove she knew things or something—because other than walking to the corner shop for some bread, Franky’s barely left the house.

So they’re watching an old episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They also watched two episodes of something called The L Word, which was some of the most awful television Erica’s ever seen, and apparently they’re going to watch the final season of Glee at some point. Not even Franky could get her fellow inmates on board with it when it was on tv, so she’d missed it at the time. It makes her wonder just how much she’s going to have to lie about enjoying it, because she’s seen Glee; she loves Franky, but this is going to test just how committed she is to the goal of letting Franky readjust is easily as possible.

“Hey,” Franky says during an ad break, shuffling around to blink up at Erica. Her head’s lying in Erica’s lap, and Erica can’t stop herself from reaching out to brush the hair away from Franky’s eyes. “Can we go somewhere?”

She’s used to this sort of thing from Franky, these word games that hide what she wants and what she means. “That depends where this somewhere is.”

It’s the first time it’s happened since she’s been there. Out. At Erica’s.

“I’m hungry,” Franky says, practically purring as Erica scratches at her hairline.

“Aaaaand?”

“Can we go to Maccas?”

The way she says it makes Erica think of a six year old Franky asking for a Happy Meal. It’s the blend of adorable smile and something sad and wistful, as if Franky’s already convinced she’s not going to get what she wants before she’s even asked.

“Of course,” Erica says, grinning at the way Franky’s face lights up. She’d do anything to take that look out of Franky’s eyes. It doesn’t matter if it’s watching terrible television or going out on a rainy Wednesday night to a a place she hasn’t eaten since university. “But only if you split a sundae with me.”

“Deal.”

“But it’s a classic.”

“It’s not. I want to go and see an actual classic.”

Erica hates summer. Franky’s obsessed with shitty 90s movies, and it was cute in the beginning, but the lift in the building is still busted and she’s sick of hauling herself up the flights of stairs to the Rooftop Cinema, when they could go and see Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon at the Astor.

who does most of the cleaning

It starts out as a joke. “This house is so clean you could eat off the floor.”

After she’s been on the tour of the place, Franky reevaluate. “This house is so clean you could eat me off the floor.”

It seems like a pretty good idea, and after it happens it’s one they’re both keen to repeat.

“No,” Franky says, shaking her head as she deletes every episode of MasterChef that Erica has saved.

who controls the netflix queue

“What the fuck is Netlfix?”

“Some American thing where you can watch every tv show ever online.”

“The fuck else did I miss while I was locked up?” Franky says, frowning at Erica’s laptop.

“Remind me to explain Myki cards to you, too.”

who calls up the super/landlord when the heat’s not working

“You’re just using me for my butch lesbian skills.” There’s a grin on her face, but Erica doesn’t like what Franky’s implying.

“I said I’d do it myself,” she says, taking the wrench from Franky’s hands.

“I’m just kidding, you know.”

“I know,” Erica sighs, and doesn’t resist when Franky rests her chin on Erica’s shoulder, arms around her waist. “I just… The first thing my father said to me when I told him Mark was moving out was that I would have to hire a handyman to take care of the house. As if despite everything I’ve accomplished, there’s no possible way I could manage a house on my own.”

Franky’s quiet for a moment, resting against her. “You want to wear the overalls?” she says eventually, and Erica can’t help but crack up at the odd ways Franky chooses to express her support.

“I’m going back to jail,” Franky grumbles, tugging at the blankets Erica’s somehow managed to cocoon herself in. “A girl could get a better night’s sleep with one eye open and a shiv under their pillow than she could here.”

who leaves their stuff around

The first time Franky trips over the pair of shoes Erica leaves lying by the door, the flare of anger terrifies her, and it’s only when Franky notices that Erica’s trembling that she gets herself under control.

She’s more careful about her shoes after that, but old habits die hard.

The second time, Franky’s drunk, and so is Erica, and apparently it’s hilarious. They end up fucking on the floor right there in the front hallway.

The third time, it’s not Erica’s shoes, and it’s not Franky who trips. She wants to be mad, but Franky’s shoes lying there waiting for Erica’s to join them by the door sets something off inside her, and she’s close to tears by the time she makes it to the kitchen.

“Hey,” Franky says, and when she gets a good look at Erica she pulls the frying pan she’s using off the burner and comes around the kitchen bench. “What’s the matter?”

“I love you,” Erica says, and Franky pulls that face she makes sometimes.

“That’s what’s the matter?”

“No,” Erica says, a bubble of laughter getting caught around the knot of emotion in her throat. “Nothing’s the matter.”

who remembers to buy the milk

Erica’s already at home when she gets in, because prison governors work better hours than junior solicitors. “Did you stop and get milk on your way home?”

“Ugh.” She dumps her bag on the kitchen bench, wincing when she remember’s there’s a laptop in there she should probably try not to destroy. “Erica, you know I have that place by the train station. The check out chick is a total creeper.”

“She has a crush on you,” Erica says, teasing.

“Yeah, she’s probably from my fucking fanclub. Like I said, total creeper.”

“I’ll come with you next time,” Erica says pulling Franky down next to her on the couch. “Protect you from the big, bad, baby lesbian.”

who remembers anniversary

“Should we do something?”

“For what?” Franky asks, flipping through the newspaper someone at the table before them left behind.

“It’s been a year.”

It’s the first time they’ve left the house together other than coincidentally in weeks, but Franky’s exams are finally over and 1pm brunch, sitting in the sunshine, is the third thing they’ve done to celebrate. It’s a good thing she’s been through this herself, otherwise she’d be offended that the first thing Franky wanted to do was sleep.

“No,” Franky says, after they’re interrupted by their waitress bringing their coffees. “Not today.”

Erica watches the cars go by for a moment, deliberately ignoring the people walking by. “You don’t think it’s something to celebrate?”

Franky takes a sip of her coffee. “We should celebrate tomorrow.”

“Why tomorrow?”

“Because that was the first day that began and ended and was filled with things I want to celebrate.”

Erica looks at this woman sitting across from her, remembers the way her day had started a year ago and remembers the way her own day had started a year ago.

“Tomorrow it is then.”
